tip of the iceberg - gems of architectural fuckups - java

Basically when you see something in the code you should start thinking about the motivations of the programmer who put that there.
For example when you see a loop with System.out.println(...) in part of the initialization code you can be sure that someone
  1. was checking if all the stuff was initialized
    1. this means that something wasn't initialized
    2. it is not trivial how to do it
    3. people have no guidelines/was not educated about the framework they using
    4. someone who should know about what developers do has no idea
    5. some may found a workaround already and done the initialization in some other way
    6. bonuses will be paid to people who will fix the code when the management understands that it is to be rewritten.
    7. no one was performing code reviews / peer reviews
    8. log4j was not configured/used properly in that project as no one cares about maintenance
  2. the developer has a taste for quick and dirty methods
    1. he was hired so this method of work is accepted/encouraged
    2. he has no support for doing the things in a civilized manner
    3. he was never blamed for doing so and his check in-s are not supervised
    4. most likely more than one developer let it pass as they was no intention/instruction to remove it (it is somebody else's problem)
    5. deadlines are rated more important than quality
    6. the customer has no idea what is going on, just pays a lot of money without having enough control over the project.
    7. #5 means that the customer has project managers hired for the project
  3. At this point no one ever checked the code for such fragments (System.out.println) thus most likely we have some other nasty problems ahead.
    1. bug fixes can be trivial but most of them can't be estimated
    2. the IT department of the customer will ask the business to extend the budget sooner or later
    3. if the product is business critical then it will have a new version developed, typically the programming platform will be blamed.
At this point you should understand that there are more than one people to blame for someone's commit. If you think pinpointing the one with SVN blame is the solution then you just don't get it.

And just for clarification: it wasn't me :) I'm just bringing the news about the 300.

error C2664: 'fopen_s' : cannot convert parameter 2 from 'const wchar_t *' to 'const char *'

why we hate windows? Because it takes ages to figure out how to convert string (unicode) to string(ansi)...
java is slower but works without googling for an hour....

#include stdio.h;
const static void log(core::stringw filename){
const wchar_t *c = filename.c_str();
char *s = new char[1000];
size_t size = 1000;
size_t t = wcstombs_s(&size, s, 1000, c, 1000);

FILE *stream;
errno_t e = fopen_s(&stream, s, "a+"); /* apend file (add text to
a file or create a file if it does not exist.*/
fprintf(stream,"%s","This is just an example :)"); /*writes*/
fclose(stream); /*done!*/
}

“If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. Juries want to fuck young girls. Everyone wants to fuck young girls!” (Roman Polanski, 1979, interview, Tetler)

how to heal in arenas as paladin

I don't have high rating so if you came to learn from the best just goole a bit more.
All I can tell about it is how to heal when you want to start doing it properly.

My major problem first was the gear. Healing in PvE gear is a bit suicidal as you overheal too much, have a huge mana pool which is useless when a priest uses mana burn and you simply can't stay alive long enough to do your job: keep yourself alive and heal others. In this specific order.

Gear problem: you need resilience. You don't want to be critted as if your hp drops bellow 30% you are dead (well, after the bubble which is mapped on the button you almost never press in PvE). If you want gear, do some BG-s first. Get the gear from Wintergrasp. You shuold understand that this game basically about having the proper gear for your task. Having full hateful gear basically turns the tables. Get items with resilience for all the remaining gear slots. Until you have it don't expect doing ok in arenas.

Talent: even though the best ranked healer paladins have full holy talent there are couple of other ways to reach our goal: stay alive. Dead healer paladin means the end of the match. As I switched to tank talents I have much better survavibility and arena rating got better and I have more fun. It also gives couple of other options to get control over enemies. If you think you can act as healer with retri talents be sure you never will be forced to heal for more than 5-10 seconds.

How to play? Don't let you or your team mate's hp drop below 50%. Kill the healer. CC only when he is low on hp as you want him/her stop healing while you and your dps mate doing some burst damage. You have stuns, use them. Communicate what you do and what you expect and when. You need to say to your dps if he want to go out of range/sight when he is on low hp thats a huge risk. Do it when the enemy flee and not when your heal fails because of the range. If he wants to finish someone thats a big concern if he has low hp too as you might get silenced and the hunted can turn to be the hunter.

How to communicate? Be nice to your team mate. Uncontrolable rage, blamestorm, screaming certainly won't help. After a match lost think first about your failures. He/she sure knows when you made your mistakes, ask him/her. In fact your dps will exactly know when he/she expected a heal which you failed to deliver.

There is an old PvE rule: "if the tank dies thats the healer's fault, if the healer dies thats the tank's fault, if dps dies that the dps's fault".
In PvP it sounds like this: "if the dps dies, that the healer's fault. If the healer dies, that's the healer's fault".

portal song

This was a triumph!
I'm making a note here:
"HUGE SUCCESS!!"

It's hard to overstate
my satisfaction.

Aperture Science:
We do what me must
because we can.

For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying
over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
till you run out of cake.
And the science gets done.
And you make a neat gun
for the people who are
still alive.

I'm not even angry...
I'm being so sincere right now-
Even though you broke my heart,
and killed me.

And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!

Now, these points of data
make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta.
We're releasing on time!
So I'm glad I got burned-
Think of all the things we learned-
for the people who are
still alive.

Go ahead and leave me...
I think I'd prefer to stay inside...
Maybe you'll find someone else
to help you?
Maybe Black Mesa?
That was a joke! HAHA!! FAT CHANCE!!

Anyway this cake is great!
It's so delicious and moist!

Look at me: still talking
when there's science to do!
When I look out there,
it makes me glad I'm not you.

I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
On the people who are
still alive.
And believe me I am
still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm
still alive.
I feel fantastic and I'm
still alive.
While you're dying I'll be
still alive.
And when you're dead I will be
still alive.

Still alive.

Still alive.

Soha nem gondoltam ezt a szimmetriáról

Tévedtem. Emberi dolog. Mindíg úgy gondoltam a szimmetriára, mint a tökéletesség forrására.

Hát, ez a TED rámutatott, hogy nincs igazam. A szimmetria a fallback, nem a cél :)

All I want is a fucking grep for windows.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/unxutils

  1. Download (UnxUtils.zip)
  2. Open in in zip/rar/7z/windows explorer, go to the \usr\local\wbin\ folder
  3. unzip the grep.exe (into %WINDIR% or into the folder of your choice and and add that folder to the PATH).
Works ouf of the box (well, out of the zip file is a more correct term :)
Have all the options as on unix (--help for example ;-).
Plus you have wget, whoami, zip, unzip, uname, sed, printf, less, wc and all the usual stuff.

FUCK cygwin.
FUCK crappy projects trying to recreate grep.
FUCK those who did not added it to windows by default.

Authentication request failed: net.sf.acegisecurity.AuthenticationServiceException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building fail

CAS can be major pain to set up if you miss some not well documented steps. The major problem with the internet is in general that you have overwhelming mass of poor quality information accessible which covers the real stuff.

Problem:

Authentication request failed: net.sf.acegisecurity.AuthenticationServiceException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target.

Solution:

"A very common mistake in SSL is certificate CN mismatching. Make sure you use the same hostname used in the CN field of the certificate."
